It’s all about the salt…

The Hot Tub Wizard

DId you know that the #1 problem with salt systems is the actual salt level? What most people don’t realize is any salt system can only estimate what the true salt level is because it is measuring the conductivity between the cell plates. There are several factors that effect this reading.

  1. Salt concentration measured in ppm
  2. Total dissolved solids in the water
  3. Water temperature 95F or higher
  4. Age of cell (there is a special coating on the plates that slowly depletes with use.
  5. Overall condition of cell which can be negatively impacted by phosphates and biofilms. (There are simple ways to deal with these.)

So if you are having problems with your salt system, get a salt test strip and see what your level is. Depending on what system you have, you should be in the range of 1500-3000ppm. Unless you have high quality components, It is recommended that you stay away from any system that requires a 3000 ppm salt level as corrosion can be an issue. With ANY tub, salt or traditional, It is always recommended using a titanium heating element. For an extra $20-40 they are extremely resistant to bad chemical balance and salt levels above 2,000 ppm.
